The Texas Historic Route 66 Sign Project is an initiative to restore, preserve, and install historically accurate signage along the remaining stretches of Route 66 in Texas.
Purpose
To highlight and preserve the historic character of the Texas portion of Route 66, which runs for about 178 miles between Glenrio (on the New Mexico border) and Texola (on the Oklahoma border).
To ensure that travelers can easily identify original alignments, businesses, and landmarks tied to the Mother Road.
To support tourism and economic development in the Panhandle by reinforcing Route 66’s cultural identity.
Scope
Installation of Historic Route 66 highway signs along key stretches of the road.
Placement near towns such as Adrian, Vega, Wildorado, Bushland Amarillo, Groom, Jericho, Alanreed , Mclean and Shamrock—all communities with surviving Route 66 heritage.
Partnerships
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) manages the official highway sign installation.
The Texas Route 66 Association coordinates fundraising, awareness
Local governments and businesses frequently support and sponsor sign placements.
Recent Developments
. Phase One complete TxDot has replaced or added the new sign to exit signs on I40 leading into route 66 communities
Phase Two The Big Texan Steak Ranch has sponsored first rounds of signs, to be placed along the Route 66 communities to help direct travel and tourism along 66
The project ties into the larger effort to prepare for the 100th anniversary of Route 66 in 2026, when increased tourism and heritage travel are expected.
Future Developments
Looking ahead, the project is launching fundraising efforts for another round of signage, specifically targeted for stretches of Route 66 outside major communities. These additional signs will help guide travelers and tourists along the original alignments of Route 66 through Texas, making navigation easier and encouraging exploration of lesser-known towns and attractions. By extending signage beyond city centers, visitors will be able to more fully experience the authentic journey of Route 66 across the Lone Star State.
Buy a Sign – Help Maintain & Place Future Signs
The Texas Department of Transportation has authorized the Old Route 66 Association of Texas to sell these authentic TXDOT-approved signs. These are made for us with the Texas Department of transportations permission, by an approved Txdot sign company who makes the same ones you see on the road.
By purchasing a sign, you’re not only getting a piece of history, but also helping preserve it. Proceeds from sales are dedicated to future phases of new signs and maintaining the ones already in place, ensuring travelers can continue to enjoy and follow the original Route 66 through Texas.
Signs are available in three sizes:
12" x 18" $50
18" x 24" $100
24" x 30" $150

NOTE: these signs are for personal use only. They are NOT to be installed next to a road or other public right-of-way.
